The Northern Lights Open started Friday and already we had an upset in the first round when IM Einar Hjalti Jensson (2371) managed to beat the highest rated player, GM Hjörvar Steinn Grétarsson (2571) in a long, hard-fought game, the longest game in the round in fact. The rest of the field was consistent, with the higher rated players winning their games, except for IM Nihal Sarin (2478) drawing his game against IM Raymond Kaufmann (2266).
The second round of the Northern Lights Open started 10 am Icelandic time (GMT+0).
Three GM’s have won both games and are in the lead: GM Xu Yinglun (2518) from China, GM Mark Hebeden (2460) from England and GM Aloyzas Kveinys (2545) from Lithuania.
GM Kveinys turned on the experience and managed to beat IM Bragi Thorfinnsson (2443) in a fashionable manner. GM Hannes Stefansson (2514) and GM Simon Williams (2437) made a short GM’s draw and GM Mark Hebden (2460) managed to trick IM Einar Hjalta Jensson (2372) in a hard-fought game.
GM Hjörvar Steinn Grétarsson (2571) again played the longest game of the round when he pressed for the win against IM Nihal Sarin (2487). IM Sarin managed to fight off the pressure and the game finished in a draw.
Round 3 is underway with many interesting matchups.
