Magnus Carlsen Takes the 100 Endgames Test!

On Thursday, Jan. 23, 2020, I had the incredible opportunity to film with World Champion Magnus Carlsen in Wijk aan Zee, The Netherlands! I recently completed a nearly 20 hour video course for GM Jesus de la Villa’s 100 Endgames You Must Know, and Magnus agreed to take the 26-question Basic Test in the course. It was a pleasure to sit and chat with the World Champion as he explained his thought process on these endgames problems, described his approach to endgame study, and shared his tremendous insight into the game in general. Enjoy!

  1. Magnus: “This was an unnecessary complicated solution”

    John: “I agree”

  2. hey I learnt something; key squares are important and something something about out flanking! watch out everyone out there with an elo 1000ish

  3. I like how he played a move in every problem that won 2-3 moves faster and chessable is like. Nah what do you know about chess?

  4. Magnus: This is one of my favorite positions.
John: ah because of the domination.
    AYO what

  5. "I wasn't sure about my endgame status" Magnus "best endgame player ever probably" Carlsen

  6. Take this test
    Magnus: Your answers are wrong

  7. Magnus was testing the programme not the other way

  8. Did ANY of you notice that most of the time the BOARD was set up WRONGLY with WHITE at THE TOP moving DOWN? (Also, again and again the FIRST RANK was put at the TOP!!) This is TOTALLY WRONG!! In ANY chess DIAGRAM, the FIRST RANK is supposed to be at the BOTTOM of the BOARD!! And in ANY chess DIAGRAM, WHITE is supposed to be at the BOTTOM moving UP!! (I am FIDE Rated and Titled since the 1970s!)

  9. Magnus: “I would never go Qb3”
Me: the test doesn’t know the correct answer

  10. The fact he can instantly recall similar or identical positions from not only his own games but others as well is incredible!

  11. Magnus taking this test is the embodiment of "I know the result to the math problem even though I don't know the correct formula." What's worse is that teachers would probably make Magnus fail the test.

  12. this guy is pretty good, he could maybe win a tournament some day

  13. He could probably have a good career in this!

  15. i literally wanna learn the magnus revised endgames ahah it seems pointless to play extra moves its like four play, i wanna cut through da bullsh*T ahah

by the way hilarious video ahah

  16. Magnus is actually just teaching chessable new strategies 😂

  17. 6:55 this amazes me with so many class players. They look away or up to get clarity

  18. Oh, look. Magnus acting like a chess computer. Fancy that.

  19. 16:06 "I am not the best person to teach" ~Magnus
Couldnt become a teacher, so he became world champion
    Poor guy

  20. In exercise 5, doesn't black win cause it's a stalemate? Also, in exercise 13, why is it winning for white?

  21. 12:34
Magnus: “If you know this, you’ll never forget it.”
    Me: Watch me

  22. damn he through his dad under the bus like that.

  23. Magnus takes the basic test – what do you think is going to happen?

  24. A true master at the game. Taking a test another grandmaster made, not only knowing the answers, but he sees problems in the solutions made by the other gm.

  25. Bro challenged the literal best endgame player of all time no debate

  26. It's interesting that Magnus finds the alternative lines silly, they are clearly not designed to be "alternatives from the same starting position" but "endgames in the same family that may arise from different prior board positions." He's too good to imagine being in a worse position.

  27. This is one of the coolest chess videos ever.
I find it fascinating how often Magnus finds himself recalling old games from chess legends and using them as reference to solve positions.

  28. Watching this makes me feel like I’m going to go crush my next opponent, but still I’m sitting under 1100 in bullet.

  29. Someone know what is that player what did Fischer face, Magnus says his name i this time 7:07 but i can't understand?

  30. Good players read the manual, masters write it.

  31. this shows how dumb such course is. there are always a lot of solutions. so bad

  32. Magnus finding error with the lesson 😂

  33. 4:15 … am i dumb? why is pawn not just taking queen on b3 here??

  34. both my favourite chess personalities in one video.

  35. this video is so cool. its unbelievable how he just has an instinct for everything. That 100% has to be a factor in his dominance and a trait that im sure separates top GMs from other high-level players. Having that instinct past the theory

  36. Magnus as a kid: Why was I wrong?
Teacher: You were technically correct but you didnt do it my way
